Automobile accidents are a leading cause of injury and death in all age groups. Approximately
6,000,000 car accidents occur each year with about 40,000 fatalities.
Alcohol is involved in 40% of these fatalities, and speeding is involved in 29% of all vehicle
accident fatalities. Speeding and alcohol are not the only problems to face when attempting to improve highway
safety.
Young drivers (15-20) and older drivers (69 and older) both have driver fatality rates much higher
than drivers between the ages of 25 and 69. Inattentive driving, distracted driving including cell phone use, and
aggressive driving (combination of moving traffic offenses) are problems that also must be dealt with.
Injury and death from car accidents causes untold suffering. In the United States, an automobile accident injury
occurs every 11 seconds and a death occurs every 12 minutes.
The consequences of these car accidents include pain, suffering, medical bills, rehabilitation, lost income, as
well as the grief that accompanies the sudden loss of a loved one.
